Metal Carpentry Tracking: From 3D Surveying to CAD Modeling

Surveying, Modeling, and Quality Control: An Integrated Approach for Managing a Carpentry Project in Milan

23 November 2024
The project involved the use of cutting-edge technologies for surveying and modeling existing structures, with a particular focus on data precision and reliability. Operations were carried out in multiple temporal phases, accompanying the entire process of demolition and reconstruction of the work. The implementation of the project followed a structured workflow:
  • Data Acquisition: Execution of laser scans at various construction site phases
  • Preliminary Processing: Point cloud processing through Riscan Pro
  • Reference System Definition: Essential calculation using the reverse engineering for future interventions on the structures.
  • CAD Modeling: Creation of precise and detailed 2D drawings useful for the executive design.
  • Subsequent tracking: in each executive phase of the construction site we performed the staking out of points in the field with implementation of the coordinate system when necessary.
  • Quality Control: Dimensional and geometric verification of surveyed structures
The surveying activities were conducted using high-precision instrumentation:
    Methodology and Equipment
  • Riegl VZ600I: State-of-the-art laser scanner
  • Leica-Geosystems TS60: High-precision total station
Data processing was performed through a comprehensive suite of specialized software:
    Specialized Software Suite
  • Riscan Pro: Riegl's proprietary software for primary point cloud processing
  • 3DR Hexagon: Advanced 3D modeling software
  • X Pad Office - Fusion: Utilized for data integration and final processing
